Tune To The Right Frequency

Coaches are trying to move a team in a specific direction. When they offer individual attention, it is advisable for the player to understand that this is time spent not moving the team. It is narrow in focus and none of the other players receive any developmental benefit from the one-on-one that the coach is spending with the player. Therefore, it is important that the player be receptive to the input.

Sadly, players often want to “discuss” or “debate” or “minimize liability” in the transmission of direction from the coach. But, this is neither the time nor the place. Players need to be attentive and receptive to what the coach is saying. What the player “believes” is irrelevant, at this point. The only expectation of the player, post-instruction, is application of the directions.

You are going to make mistakes. Coaches know that. But, not applying what the coach has directed is a roadblock for you. Attempting to discuss directives is creating an image of not being receptive to coaching. Please, players, take the coaching and apply it. If you want to discuss it, do so, away from the practice environment.
