Size Matters?
With a growing number of NCDC teams requiring team fees, can we even call NCDC a Tier2 Division, any more? We understand operating costs and all of the related, but the foundation of Tier2 has traditionally been a tuition free opportunity for advancing hockey players. But, at the ownership level, this shift often seems to be profit generating moreso than covering operating expenses.
This is a rapid expansion and many people are concerned about the legitimacy of the NCDC. We cannot ignore the fact that the NCDC falls under the USPHL umbrella. And, as of December of the 2025/26 season, nine USPHL teams have folded, several never got their startup off the ground, and several others are under new ownership. Certainly not the “warm and fuzzy” that players and families seek, when looking for advancement options.
Regardless, 2026/27 is shaping up to be (yet another) interesting year in junior hockey.
